DEVICES & LOCAL SERVERS

The right devices.
A considered system.

A practical shortlist for your home, from the local server to the button by your bedside. Chosen around privacy, compatibility and everyday use.

Understand the connection options

01 / THE FOUNDATION

A server sized for your home.

Business mini PCs offer flexibility. A dedicated controller keeps a simpler system focused. The right choice depends on the workload.

Device counts are planning examples, not capacity limits.

The bands below illustrate briefs I would assess; they are not benchmarks or guaranteed maxima. They count physical devices, not software entities, and exclude continuous video analysis. Radio coverage, reporting frequency, history and extra services matter more than the count alone.

Home AssistantServers & controllers

Home Assistant Green

A quiet, focused starting point for lighting, sensors and everyday routines.

4 GB RAM · 32 GB eMMC · Ethernet

Best-fit brief
Condo, townhome or a home focused on core automation
Planning example, not a tested capacity
25–100 devices · core automation
Indicative hardware budgetCA$300–375Controller only; radio adapters are separate.
Configuration & services

What it can run

Home Assistant OS with selected apps such as Mosquitto, Zigbee2MQTT and ESPHome. Keep history retention and extra services modest.

Where I would draw the line

A dedicated home controller, rather than a host for several virtual machines. Put continuous camera recording and demanding local AI on separate hardware.

Connection requirements

Wired Ethernet. Add a supported Zigbee coordinator for Zigbee; Matter over Thread also needs a compatible Thread border router.

Budget basis

Indicative hardware allowance. Canadian retail reference: CA$349 at North Control. Installation, radio adapters, UPS and tax are additional.

ExpertCenter PN42

A compact business PC for home automation with room for a few supporting services.

Intel N100 · suggested 16 GB RAM / 512 GB SSD

Best-fit brief
Townhome or detached home with a modest service stack
Planning example, not a tested capacity
50–150 devices · a few extra services
Indicative hardware budgetCA$650–850Planning allowance with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD.
Configuration & services

What it can run

Home Assistant OS directly, or a small virtualised setup with Home Assistant plus Mosquitto, Zigbee2MQTT and DNS filtering. The final combination is sized before installation.

Why consider it

Fanless design, replaceable memory and NVMe storage. The N100 version supports up to 16 GB RAM; it is best kept to a focused workload with good ventilation.

Service limits

Extensive video analysis, large databases and multiple heavy virtual machines need a separate assessment. Manufacturer support for the proposed operating system is checked by SKU.

Budget basis

Canadian reference: a 4 GB / 128 GB PN42 listing at CA$576.99. The allowance includes a proposed memory/storage upgrade; availability and warranty are confirmed in the quote.

ThinkCentre M70q Gen 5 Tiny

A serviceable business desktop for larger projects and a more substantial local-service workload.

Core i5-14400T · suggested 16–32 GB / 512 GB–1 TB

Best-fit brief
Larger homes or projects needing several isolated services
Planning example, not a tested capacity
150–350 devices · multiple local services
Indicative hardware budgetCA$1,400–1,900Configured hardware allowance; service coverage varies by SKU.
Configuration & services

What it can run

Home Assistant in a VM, a separate Linux/Docker environment, monitoring, DNS filtering and backup jobs. Resources are reserved for the home-control system first.

Why consider it

A business product line with replaceable memory/storage and documented support options. Exact warranty, service coverage and regional configuration are confirmed before purchase.

Cameras and voice

Frigate, local voice and other intensive services need their own sizing. Video decoding, detection acceleration and recording storage are assessed separately; no camera-count guarantee is implied.

Budget basis

Canadian reference: CA$1,399 for Core i5-14400T / 16 GB / 512 GB. The upper allowance covers a proposed RAM/SSD upgrade.

What is included in the server budget?

These are estimated configured-hardware allowances in Canadian dollars, informed by Canadian retail listings reviewed in October 2026. They are not fixed offers or a promise of stock. Setup, tax, delivery, radio adapters, backup storage and a UPS are separate.

A larger PC does not extend Zigbee or Thread coverage. I plan coordinators, powered mesh devices and radio placement separately, then confirm resources, backups and update support before recommending the final configuration.

Zigbee

Useful forHallways, utility rooms and night pathways

Battery-powered detection through a local Zigbee coordinator.

Fit & compatibility

Integration

The manufacturer lists Home Assistant among compatible platforms. Placement, timeout and sensitivity to the room are tested as part of setup.

Good to know

Motion detection is different from continuous presence detection. A person sitting still may not keep a motion-based room occupied.

BILRESA · Dual button

A compact physical button for the room scenes you use most.

Matter · Thread

Useful forSimple scene control and room lighting

Matter over Thread; different from older IKEA Zigbee remotes.

Fit & compatibility

Connection requirements

Requires a compatible Thread border router and Matter controller. This card refers to the dual-button model, not the scroll-wheel version.

Selection note

Pairing, button events and firmware behaviour must be checked with the target Home Assistant release. Newer device categories can expose different functions across platforms, so validation comes before a client recommendation.

Product photographs are from manufacturer and retailer listings. They illustrate the model, not a customer installation. Brands and images belong to their respective owners; inclusion does not imply a partnership. Image sources

CONNECTIONS, CLEARLY EXPLAINED

Different paths.
One considered home.

Home Assistant can bring supported devices together. The connection method is chosen for the job, not just for its logo.

Zigbee

A mature, low-power mesh option for sensors, buttons and lighting. A local coordinator brings compatible devices into your system.

Needs a Zigbee coordinator

Matter over Wi-Fi

Uses your home Wi-Fi for local Matter control. A practical option for powered devices when wireless coverage is dependable.

WHAT MATTER IMPROVES

More choice.
Less platform lock-in.

Matter is a modern, shared standard for local smart-home control. It brings common device functions, more consistent setup and the option to share a device with more than one compatible platform.

Authenticated devices and encrypted communication are built into the standard. A Matter logo does not, by itself, mean every vendor feature is available or that all cloud connections are disabled.

A modern standard, still evolving

Matter is already in everyday use. New device categories, firmware and platform implementations continue to evolve, so pairing issues, missing functions or bugs can still occur. Updates may resolve a specific issue, but there is no universal date when every device will work perfectly.

I check the exact device and controller versions, network discovery, IPv6 and any Thread border router before committing to a design. A well-supported Zigbee product can still be the better choice for a particular task.

BEFORE IT ENTERS YOUR HOME

Privacy first. Details checked.

01

Local where possible

I prioritise local control, limited data sharing and clear access permissions. Cloud-dependent options are an informed choice, not the default.

02

Supported in practice

I check the exact model, firmware, maintenance needs and everyday controls. A compatibility logo is the beginning of the review.

03

Right for the installation

Regional approvals, electrical loads and wiring matter. Hardware selection includes how it will be powered, maintained and supported.
